The Midwest Connection

Midwest values are different than much of the rest of the country. People from the Midwestern United States are often very down to earth and in many ways connect directly with the many natural resources found throughout this region. It is in the Midwest where you will find the highest population of fishermen, hunters, campers and bird watchers. Why, Minnesota alone has one of the highest numbers of golf courses per capita than any other state. Midwest farmers are second to no one when it comes to world food production. Agriculture is still a leading industry in the region along with the world's largest food companies (Cargill, General Mills, Kraft, Land-O-Lakes, just to name a few). And relatively new, yet directly related to our valued agricultural roots is the growing bio-fuels industry with the world leading production of Ethanol. And did I mention Wind Energy? Parts of Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota are filling up with massive wind energy farms. And you thought Holland had a leading edge on wind.

Why so much outdoor activity? Why such an earthy connection when many parts of Midwestern weather can turn so nasty? Sure, there are many who enjoy escaping to warmer climates during the cold winter months. But you will also find a very large percentage of locals that just as soon play in the cold doing things like downhill skiing, cross country skiing, wind-kite skiing or skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Simply put- any day outdoors (bugs, weather, etc.) greatly outweighs those less-than-perfect days.

But there is one other element- Midwesterners work to play. That's right! We work hard, we play hard, period. With so many distinctive seasonal changes and often times disruptive weather any day outside playing, gardening, swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, golfing, hunting, boating is a perfect day. And sooooo precious.
